About

This blog will chronicle the British Asian female experience. Not just Asian, but Middle Eastern and African. It will showcase the unique perspectives of first, second and third generation immigrants to Britain  from lands with cultures that strictly define what and how a woman should be. While some of these women are grateful for their newfound freedoms, they are still distressed by the misogyny they see that pervades all nations and cultures, and particuarly that which is incubated in their ethnic communities. They hope, through the wisdom of their experiences, to bring women’s rights issues to the mainstream as well as mediate with their home cultures to establish the equality and rights of women.

  3. Hiya, I tried to post a comment earlier but it didn’t seem to go through. Just wanted to say thank you for setting up this blog! I’m a brown woman who bitches quite a lot, as is my mother so she’ll love this too.

I think a lot of the issues that are inherent in Asian cultures nowadays will be pretty much obsolete in the next 10-15 years. Whilst it may be anecdotal, most of the men in my family know how to cook, some of them through choice, others through being widowed or divorced. They also relish it, getting approval from their mothers, sisters, and other male relatives (although their approval is more of a “how hard can it be?” ilk). Misogyny still exists, but it’s getting weaker all the time as people realise that equality is much more fun, and if they ever want to get married again, they’ll need to show they’re “modern men” – it probably helps that women are a lot more discerning than they probably used to be.

There is still a way to go before true equality but we’ve definitely come along leaps and bounds in the last 40 years of being in the UK!

Great blog, keep it up :-)

    Hey there, Carmen!

I’m the most regular blogger here, so I’ll just say: thanks for your comment.

I just checked out your blog, and I see that you are an Asian Christian… Hmmm.

Not to sound divisive or anything, but I definitely think Asian Christians have modernised/are modernising faster than other (especially South) Asian religions… I wish I could have the same levels of optimism as you!

Thanks for the comment though, and you’ve inspired me to do another post at some point on why I feel the pessimism I do…
